It’s hard to believe we’re in the last stretch of summer. I have done a decent job at keeping the girls busy, but there definitely are days where we go a little stir crazy. I am probably not the best at keeping them “actively engaged and learning” because summer is a break for all of us. But now that school is around the corner, I want to start getting them into a routine of learning – especially Kennedy.
Kennedy will be entering her last year of preschool (I can’t believe it!) in a 4 year old dual language (Spanish) program. This is her second year learning Spanish, and her 4th year at this Early Childhood Program, and I am very excited for her. She’s also had the opportunity to learn other skills, and one she particularly loved was her math class.
I thought it would be a fun idea to incorporate math with her favorite thing ever – SNACKS!
I did a little searching and created this game for her in Photoshop. I then printed it out on cardstock and cut the cards out. There are 12 cards in total.
The idea is to count the dots on the side with her favorite Horizon Organic Grahams and then recognize the number on the left. She is great with recognizing letters and numbers (and she can even write her name!), but I really wanted her to focus on counting and addition.
This was a great way to occupy some time and make snack time a little less of a headache. Snack time is usually in front of the TV, so this is certainly a welcome change! Not to mention, Horizon Organic Grahams are snacks I can feel good about her chomping down on. And of course we love their milk!
You can also make this activity a little more advanced by asking them to do a little adding. I then took two of the cards and ask her to add together the amount on both, and then repeat that “if we add 1 to 4, we have 5.” When she did three, she got to eat the grahams.
Any small thing that helps us get back into a learning routine is a good thing. I can’t wait to see what this school year holds for my girls, and how much more they will learn. That’s one of my favorite parts of being their mama.
